The Harvard panel also brushed aside a clear conflict on interest stemming from the fact that Douglass is a paid consultant for the toothpaste industry, a major user of fluoride. *Last year, people in Burnie, Tasmania, were walking the streets collecting signatures on a petition to the Tasmanian Government demanding relief from 5 years waiting lists for dental treatment.*
That is after 50 years compulsory mass medicating the population with fluoridating Tasmania's drinking water supplies. "There will never be dental decay problems in Tasmania." Indeed Tasmania has also been claiming 50 years of benefits from fluoridation, an example expressed throughout Australia by the fluoride travellers selling fluoridation.

No room at the inn: dialysis in western Sydney

The New South Wales Opposition says it is concerned renal dialysis services are operating at full capacity across western Sydney, potentially compromising patient care.
The Sydney West Area Health Service has confirmed that its four dialysis centres are working at full capacity.
It says no patients are being turned away, but some have to wait if they want treatment close to home.
The Liberal Member for Baulkham Hills, Wayne Merton, says the high demand is playing havoc with some of his constituents, and their appointments are often changed. "A lot of these people are elderly and have transport difficulties travelling quite considerable distances," he said.
"I think the State Government has to acknowledge there is a problem and I think a closer examination will in fact disclose that is the situation."
The health service says it tries to accommodate patient requests.
Western Sydney has a higher than average rate of demand for dialysis.
A new treatment unit has been approved at Auburn and should be commissioned next year.

On June 19, 2008 the American Dental Association updated its website reporting that
fluoride is a concern to all kidney patients, not just those on dialysis.
Along with false assurances of safety, fluoride chemicals are added to some public and bottled water in the unscientific belief it reduces cavities.
Fluoride-induced bone damage could occur in kidney patients who consume even
"optimally" fluoridated water because malfunctioning kidneys do not properly sift
fluoride from the blood and out of the body. Fluoride can build up in bones making
them brittle and fracture.
For this reason, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) withdrew its fluoridation
endorsement in October 2007, which they made public in a fluoride paper dated April
15, 2008 with advice that “individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be
notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.”
After the 2006 National Research Council's (NRC) fluoride toxicology report was
brought to their attention, the NKF withdrew its fluoridation endorsement.
The NRC fluoride report was created by a 12-member panel of scientists to review
current fluoride toxicology data at the request of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine whether the maximum contaminant level goal (4 mg/L) of fluoride in public water supplies is safe. The NRC says that level must be lowered. But neither the NRC nor the EPA has defined a safe level.
At least three NRC panel members conclude that water fluoride levels should be close
to zero, not only to protect kidney patients, but also thyroid patients, infants and high water drinkers.
This would effectively shut down fluoridation in the U.S.
But organized dentistry isn't going to let go of its pet project and diminish its political viability by admitting fluoridation is a failed experiment._ So they downplay anything negative about fluoride and in this case they want you to know that fluoride is only a secondary concern. And, of course, this writer wants you to know that secondary doesn't mean no concern.
However, even the ADA seems to be covering their legal assets with this statement in
their /Fluoridation Facts /booklet, “decreased fluoride removal may occur among
persons with severely impaired kidney function who may not be on kidney dialysis.”

The Deputy Premier and Tasmanian Minister for Health and Human Services, Lara Giddings, will be surrounded by Angels at Parliament House this afternoon when she officially launches Kidney Health Week which focuses on detection, prevention and management of kidney disease to lower the number of dialysis patients.
Chronic Kidney Disease is responsible for the highest number of hospital visits to public hospitals in Australia. In 2005 / 2006 one third of all admissions to public hospitals were due to dialysis, 2000 each day of the year.
In 2005 / 2006 a total of 731,000 visits out of a total of 2.215 million hospital admissions were related to kidney disease.
In Tasmania in 2005 / 2006 a total of 12,400 hospital admissions were related to kidney disease.
To celebrate its 40th Birthday Kidney Health Australia has recognised Forty Kidney Health Angels with Operation Angel Awards across Australia to people from all walks of life for their work and involvement in kidney health issues.
Anne Wilson, Chief Executive of Kidney Health Australia said, "the official recognition of such a diverse range of people from so many walks of life reveals the many faces of kidney disease of which one in three Australians is at increased risk.
"Operation Angel recognizes and promotes the work and care carried out by hundreds of people daily in hospitals and medical clinics to assist over fourteen thousand Australians to remain alive on dialysis.
"It also recognizes the commitment of family, friends and work colleagues of kidney patients."
Kidney Health Angels being recognized today includes:
Margaret Binns - a dialysis nurse for more than 20 years, Margaret Binns has worked tirelessly in both professional and community settings to improve the well-being of people with kidney disease.
Michael Dewis - a carer at the Launceston General Hospital Renal Unit.
Kerry Walker - a transplant recipient who was on dialysis for seven years until he received a kidney in 2003. Kerry has become an advocate for public awareness about chronic kidney disease.
Jennifer Reynolds - a nurse attached to the satellite Renal Unit of the Launceston General Hospital in Burnie. She has a particular gift of personalising her nursing, so that the recipients are assured their care and well-being is of prime importance to her.

CHRONIC kidney disease sufferers will double in number over the next decade unless the Government starts national preventive screening of high-risk groups, according to one of the world's experts on the rampant "silent killer".
Professor Allan Collins, president of the United States National Kidney Foundation, criticised the Government for not doing enough to combat the spread of the disease, which kills more than 40 Australians a day. Speaking at a conference in Melbourne yesterday, he called for a national screening and early detection program to stem soaring rates of kidney failure.
"If you don't do anything in the next 10 years you're going to double the number of people on dialysis," he said.

New Fuel, End Of Fluoride Era

Current evidence suggests fluorides damage the body, and professional commentary is focused now on thyroid and kidney damage. In view of this, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) recently ended its position of endorsing water fluoridation, stating the "NKF position paper on fluoridation is outdated. The paper is withdrawn and will no longer be circulated." The NKF now claims that it "has no position." The NKF also stated, "Individuals with CKD [chronic kidney disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure" CKD is in turn linked to bone deformities, including brittleness, bone density problems, fractures, kyphosis, etc. (4) (5) (6)
While the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates 19 million U.S. adults have CKD, and that there was a "104%" increase in kidney failure during 1990 to 2001, the NKF describes a different number: "26 million Americans have CKD and another 20 million more are at increased risk." Many do not even know they have CKD, due to the wide range of symptoms that can include high blood pressure, fatigue, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, etc. Sadly for the millions of Americans now suffering or at risk for CKD the warnings about fluoride have been rather quiet and have seen little mainstream publicity. Although hemp continues to be banned from our use, the entire nation has been inundated with fluorides to such a degree it now contaminates most of our foods, as well as most of the national water supply, and yet the government continues to aggressively promote it.

The WHO Oral Health Programme continues to emphasize the importance of public health approaches to the effective use of fluorides for the prevention of dental caries in the 21st century. Everyone should be encouraged to brush daily with a fluoride toothpaste. In addition, where the incidence and prevalence of dental caries in the community is high to moderate, or where there are firm indications that the incidence of caries is increasing, an additional source of fluoride (water, salt or milk) should be considered. Where the country (or area of the country) has a moderate level of economic and technological development, a municipal water supply reaching a large population, trained water engineers and favourable public opinion, water fluoridation using fluoride at a concentration of 0.5–1 mg/l is the method of choice (48). Salt fluoridation is a widely practised alternative that has the advantage of allowing consumer choice. It should be emphasized that "topical" fluorides such as toothpaste can also have a "systemic" effect when they are inadvertently ingested by young children. Indeed, three independent studies in Australia, Canada and the USA indicate that 47–72% of dental fluorosis in children can be attributed to the systemic effect of fluoride toothpastes (49). Dispensing a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, encouraging parents to supervise toothbrushing by their young children, and the use of toothpastes containing less fluoride by young children are approaches to ameliorating this problem. It is recommended that dental fluorosis be monitored periodically to detect increases in or higher-than-acceptable levels of fluorosis. Concerns about fluoridation are quickly surfacing as the National Kidney Foundation withdrew its support of the chemical additive at the same time the largest association of water professionals in the world was warned not to destroy evidence that may be required in legal actions filed by individuals harmed by drinking fluoridated water.
Following reports of the NKF's acknowledgement that patients with kidney disease "should be notified of the potential risk" to their health from drinking fluoridated water, the American Water Works Association has been given notice that it must not eliminate or tamper with documents or recordings, indicating lawsuits could be filed in the near future.
Attorney Robert Reeves delivered a fluoride evidence preservation notice to the 60,000-member water association last week. The document named AWWA's Denver headquarters, regional offices and national and regional officers as "potentially responsible parties" who might be named in lawsuits filed on behalf of kidney patients and other individuals injured by ingesting fluoride.

Janet Lail learned to live for years with the constant pain she likens to brillo pads rubbed over scorched skin (ouch) and monthly hospitalizations due to a kidney disease (chronic pyelonephritis) that requires she drink loads of water.
Then suddenly the pain disappeared and her hospital visits became fewer and farther between. Even the doctors were confounded-–nothing had changed – except the water-–it was no longer fluoridated.
Lail’s water provider, the South Blount Utility District in Tennessee opened a new plant in June 2004 and started providing unfluoridated water.
Lail told this story to Lesli Bales-Sherrod, a reporter for the Daily Times of Maryville, Tennessee (1)
“`I thought it was a fluke or something,’ (Lail) acknowledged. ‘When you’ve been sick like that for so many years, you don’t want to analyze why (your’re doing better). I didn’t want to talk about it; I was afraid it might go away,’” Bales-Sherrod writes.
Lail is willing to show her medical records to the skeptical. But she probably doesn’t know that the literature is littered with warnings that people with pyelonephritis should avoid fluoride.
But, for some reason, otherwise sensible people trust dentists’ opinions on fluoride’s bodily effects-–as if looking into mouths all day can detect kidney problems.
So legislators follow dentists’ advice and put fluoride into their constituents’ water supplies. Media knight dentists as fluoride experts and write positive fluoride stories, not at all shy to belittle their readers opposed to fluoridation-–a script handed to them by the fluoridationists.

There is a sad parallel between the arrogant and reckless way that the Metropolitan Water District went ahead and fluoridated the water of 18 million people in Southern California and the current attempt by the Queensland government to mandate fluoridation for the whole state. Just a month ago, the official line in the US was that amalgam dental fillings were perfectly safe. Since then, America’s chief health regulator has said they are dangerous for pregnant women and young children, and now it is may ask dentists to pay out $3,000 for filter systems to stop the mercury from the fillings getting into the water system.
The US Congress has been asking the American Dental Association to testify and explain its resistance to installing the filters, known as separators. ADA spokesman William J Walsh says his profession acknowledges that it is the biggest contributor to mercury getting into the water system, but says it does its best to reduce the exposure. However, that at best doesn’t include paying out for a separator, which Walsh says is too expensive for dental practices to buy.
Congressmen took the opportunity to berate the ADA about the dangers of mercury fillings. Republican Dan Burton from Indiana said his grandson became autistic after he received nine vaccinations, seven of which contained mercury.

The Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) have received instructions from
health officials on how they should consult local residents. They should

supply, and then have a three-month consultation process. Only if the
response were 'predominantly in favour of fluoridation' would the water
company be told to start fluoridation.

Something in the water
How close are we to compulsory fluoridation in Britain? In July 1997, a
regional UK health authority was given High Court permission to launch a
judicial review to challenge the local water authority's refusal to
fluoridate the water supply (Northern Echo, July 1, 1997). This followed
demands in November 1996 by the British Dental Association (BDA) supported
by the British Medical Association (BMA), health authorities and the British
Fluoridation Society (BFS) for legislation to make fluoridation mandatory on
request by a health authority.
To counteract a recent adjournment debate about forcible fluoridation under
health authority request, the NPWA is now calling for a full independent
public enquiry, and an All Party Group Against Fluoridation has been
reconvened.
Meanwhile, plans are afoot in the US to halt unreined fluoridation. The
Washington Lodge of the National Federation of Federal Employees (mainly
government scientists, including many from the Environmental Protection
Agency) has unanimously condemned fluoridation.
As Dr Robert Carlton, a US EPA scientist, put it, "Fluoridation is the
greatest case of scientific fraud of this century if not of all time."
"Fluoride consumption in the United States is out of control. Organised
dentistry has lobbied for fluoride, unchallenged, for years. Now we have a
glut of fluoride in our water, foods and beverages, along with fluoridated
dental products," said Paul Beeber, president of the New York State
Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation (Townsend Letter, April 1998).
The worry is that the British dental lobby will be allowed to follow suit.

Fluoride : dentists sue ADA
Forty American dentists are suing the American Dental Association for
alleged distribution of misinformation to its members about the dangers of
fluoridation.
The lawsuit, which coincides with the release of a government study linking
fluoride use to cancer, claims that fluoride potentially causes birth
defects as well as cancer, and that using fluoride does not significantly
reduce tooth decay.
The suit also charges that the ADA attempted to pressure the US government
to increase the maximum dose of fluoride in public drinking water.
As a result of one toxicity study showing, as it cautiously put it,
"equivocal" evidence that fluoride causes bone cancer, the union for
employees of the Environmental Protection Agency has asked the EPA to "issue
a health warning recommending that fluoridation be stopped immediately."

mayorial campaign may be fluoride.
The scuttlebutt is that Frank Dobson, the Labour candidate, is running on a
not very well publicised pro fluoride campaign that, if elected, he intends

Drowning in fluoride
Nearly all toothpastes sold in the US and UK contain fluoride - typically 1000-1500 parts per million. Commonly used mouth rinses contain 230-900 ppm. Fluoride is also present in candy-flavoured treatments and dentifrices. Fluoride products for preventing tooth decay may contain as much as 9000 ppm. Researchers at Madras Dental College and elsewhere found that the fluoride in fluoridated toothpaste, even if not swallowed, is quickly absorbed through the lining of the mouth and gums into the general circulation (Lancet, 1991; 337: 1213).
Toothpaste and vitamin preparations - and presumably baby formulas - containing fluoride cause allergic reactions in some children, toxic reactions in others (see www.cadvision.com/-fluoride/adverse ). The resulting mouth ulcers don’t respond to antibiotics or local medications, but clear up promptly when non-fluoride toothpaste is substituted (Ann Allergy; 1967; 25: 388-91).
According to Accountability in Research (1997; 5: 225-37), Fejerskov showed in 1990 that fluoride ingested (as from fluoridated baby formulas) by children before their teeth have erupted results in improper calcification of enamel, making the teeth more susceptible to cavities (J Dent Res, 1990; 60: 692-700; Commun Dent Oral Epidemiol, 1990; 18: 46-56). Yet, a warning about overdosing formula-fed babies with fluoride was refused publication (Fluoride, 1987; 30: 125).
Toothpaste ads on TV show generous amounts being squeezed onto a brush, and some parents put a large glob of toothpaste on a child’s toothbrush rather than the pea-sized amount recommended.
Also, small children don’t have complete control of the swallowing reflex. In one test, most preschool children did not expectorate or rinse after brushing with fluoride toothpaste (Pediatr Dent, 1997; 19: 99-103). Fluoride is also present in some multivitamin/mineral tablets.
In the US, 25 per cent of children take fluoride supplements (Wall St Journal, December 21, 1998, p B1), but some physicians fail to consider total intake excluding the supplements (Am J Epidemiol, 1994; 140: 451- 71). If the water, too, is fluoridated, a child’s exposure can be eight times greater than established US safety levels (Earth Island J, 1998; Spring: 40-1).

Battelle found a very positive correlation to the amount of fluoride consumed and the size, number and kind of cancer the mice developed.19 The study ran for only two years or about the life span of the animals. The animals were awash with illness and abnormalities of all kinds including kidney disease, liver disease, blood diseases, tumors, and cancer. In particular the fluoride groups showed thyroid adenomas, dysplasias of the oral mucosa, liver cancer of a very rare type (hepatocholangiocarcinomas), and osteosarcomas of which one appeared in the mid-range male rat and four appeared in high-range male rats. Female rats exhibited dose-related osteosclerosis and all fluoridated rodents developed dental fluorosis.

Americans' distrust of societal institutions continues to grow, and now comes evidence of yet another burgeoning scandal: Fluoride-Gate. A torrent of recent bad news about the safety of fluorides has brought key names to the surface from the murky alphabet soup of players in the fluoride game at EPA, CDC, FDA, NIDCR, USDA, ADA, and AMA. The inevitable questions have begun about who knew what, when, and why was certain information kept quiet.
The first ominous drumbeats started in 2006, when a National Research Council committee recommended that the Environmental Protection Agency lower the allowable amount of fluoride in drinking water - to an unspecified level. As if that wasn't unnerving enough, the committee specifically stated that kidney patients, diabetics, seniors, infants, and outdoor workers were susceptible populations especially vulnerable to harm from fluoride ingestion.
Centers for Disease Control officials strove mightily to dismiss NRC's report as irrelevant, but in August of 2007 CDC's ethics committees received a formal ethics complaint about CDC's activities in promoting fluoridation.

The document acknowledges gaping holes in research concerning kidney impacts from fluorides, lending new ammunition to the growing numbers of cities, health professionals, water agencies, and citizens who question industry and government assertions that water fluoridation has been proven safe.
The statement formally cancels NKF’s previous position paper on water fluoridation and recommends that kidney patients be notified of the risks via the organization’s web site. Several studies have shown that exposure to fluoride can cause behavioural
changes (Int Clin Psychopharmacol, 1994; 9: 79-82; Neurotoxicol and Teratol,
1995; 17: 169-77; Fluoride, 1996; 29: 187-8). At a 1998 conference on
fluoride in Washington, Professor Roger Masters reported a link between the
blood lead levels of 280,000 children in Massachusetts and the use of
silicofluorides for water fluoridation; fluoride increases the toxic effects
and absorption of lead. Both in Britain and in Georgia, behaviours
associated with lead toxicity, such as violent crime, are more frequent in
communities using silicofluorides than in areas not using them. At the same
conference, Dr Phyllis Mullinix, a neuro toxicologist at Boston Children's
Hospital, Massachusetts, reported results of a study using two steroids to
treat childhood leukaemia, one of which had a fluorine atom in its
structure. The steroid caused behaviour patterns typical of hyperactivity. A
follow up study showed a significant drop in average IQ scores, compared
with children using the non fluoride drug (Fluoride, 1998; 31: 175).

Wrecked by fluoride
I am horrified that the water supplies in inner city areas like Glasgow may
be fluoridated. I have experienced horrendous reactions to fluoride since
the age of 13, and so have my children. Tests in 1993 proved I have a deadly
allergy to fluoride. The motility of my white blood cells was 42 per cent of
the normal value due to long term exposure to fluoride, and when incubated
for two hours with 1 ppm fluoride, motility was zero. Hence I had no
immunity to infections.
In 1995, I was prescribed (heavily fluoridated) Prozac. Twenty minutes after
taking one 20 mg capsule, I went into anaphylactic shock.
After taking Prozac, my older son developed tonsillitis, a chest infection,
committed criminal assault (on provocation) and attacked a family member. He
has no recollection of these events.
In 1993 my older daughter developed a near fatal acute
inflammation/infection of the white matter of the brain and spinal cord and
had two strokes, leaving her permanently disabled and with depression,
diarrhoea and multiple infections. Dr Sheila Gibson of the Glasgow
Homoeopathic Hospital NHS Trust confirmed that my daughter inherited my
severe allergy to fluoride. Prior to this, she was exposed to fluoride in
dental treatment, mouthwashes, toothpaste and natural sources, and when
prescribed Prozac for depression, she developed full body fungal rash, gut
cramps, worsening headaches and diarrhoea.
My two younger children developed severe behavioural and health problems
after first use of fluoride toothpastes, including attention deficit
hyperactivity type syndrome, chronic tonsillitis, diarrhoea and gut cramps,
asthma like attacks, violence and even self harm. I have withdrawn all
fluoride from my family since 1993. Any accidental exposure since has
rendered my children extremely violent and ill. It took years for the
effects to subside the longer they avoid fluoride, the calmer and healthier
they remain.
We have survived by avoiding fluoride, but what will become of us if it is

The Harvard panel also brushed aside a clear conflict on interest stemming from the fact that Douglass is a paid consultant for the toothpaste industry, a major user of fluoride. That is after 50 years compulsory mass medicating the population with fluoridating Tasmania's drinking water supplies. "There will never be dental decay problems in Tasmania." Indeed Tasmania has also been claiming 50 years of benefits from fluoridation, an example expressed throughout Australia by the fluoride travellers selling fluoridation.

No room at the inn: dialysis in western Sydney

The New South Wales Opposition says it is concerned renal dialysis services are operating at full capacity across western Sydney, potentially compromising patient care.
The Sydney West Area Health Service has confirmed that its four dialysis centres are working at full capacity.
It says no patients are being turned away, but some have to wait if they want treatment close to home.
The Liberal Member for Baulkham Hills, Wayne Merton, says the high demand is playing havoc with some of his constituents, and their appointments are often changed. "A lot of these people are elderly and have transport difficulties travelling quite considerable distances," he said.
"I think the State Government has to acknowledge there is a problem and I think a closer examination will in fact disclose that is the situation."
The health service says it tries to accommodate patient requests.
Western Sydney has a higher than average rate of demand for dialysis.
A new treatment unit has been approved at Auburn and should be commissioned next year.

On June 19, 2008 the American Dental Association updated its website reporting that
fluoride is a concern to all kidney patients, not just those on dialysis.
Along with false assurances of safety, fluoride chemicals are added to some public and bottled water in the unscientific belief it reduces cavities.
Fluoride-induced bone damage could occur in kidney patients who consume even
"optimally" fluoridated water because malfunctioning kidneys do not properly sift
fluoride from the blood and out of the body. Fluoride can build up in bones making
them brittle and fracture.
For this reason, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) withdrew its fluoridation
endorsement in October 2007, which they made public in a fluoride paper dated April
15, 2008 with advice that “individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be
notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.”
After the 2006 National Research Council's (NRC) fluoride toxicology report was
brought to their attention, the NKF withdrew its fluoridation endorsement.
The NRC fluoride report was created by a 12-member panel of scientists to review
current fluoride toxicology data at the request of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine whether the maximum contaminant level goal (4 mg/L) of fluoride in public water supplies is safe. The NRC says that level must be lowered. But neither the NRC nor the EPA has defined a safe level.
At least three NRC panel members conclude that water fluoride levels should be close
to zero, not only to protect kidney patients, but also thyroid patients, infants and high water drinkers.
This would effectively shut down fluoridation in the U.S.
But organized dentistry isn't going to let go of its pet project and diminish its political viability by admitting fluoridation is a failed experiment._ So they downplay anything negative about fluoride and in this case they want you to know that fluoride is only a secondary concern. And, of course, this writer wants you to know that secondary doesn't mean no concern.
However, even the ADA seems to be covering their legal assets with this statement in
their /Fluoridation Facts /booklet, “decreased fluoride removal may occur among
persons with severely impaired kidney function who may not be on kidney dialysis.”

The Deputy Premier and Tasmanian Minister for Health and Human Services, Lara Giddings, will be surrounded by Angels at Parliament House this afternoon when she officially launches Kidney Health Week which focuses on detection, prevention and management of kidney disease to lower the number of dialysis patients.
Chronic Kidney Disease is responsible for the highest number of hospital visits to public hospitals in Australia. In 2005 / 2006 one third of all admissions to public hospitals were due to dialysis, 2000 each day of the year.
In 2005 / 2006 a total of 731,000 visits out of a total of 2.215 million hospital admissions were related to kidney disease.
In Tasmania in 2005 / 2006 a total of 12,400 hospital admissions were related to kidney disease.
To celebrate its 40th Birthday Kidney Health Australia has recognised Forty Kidney Health Angels with Operation Angel Awards across Australia to people from all walks of life for their work and involvement in kidney health issues.
Anne Wilson, Chief Executive of Kidney Health Australia said, "the official recognition of such a diverse range of people from so many walks of life reveals the many faces of kidney disease of which one in three Australians is at increased risk.
"Operation Angel recognizes and promotes the work and care carried out by hundreds of people daily in hospitals and medical clinics to assist over fourteen thousand Australians to remain alive on dialysis.
"It also recognizes the commitment of family, friends and work colleagues of kidney patients."

Jennifer Reynolds - a nurse attached to the satellite Renal Unit of the Launceston General Hospital in Burnie. She has a particular gift of personalising her nursing, so that the recipients are assured their care and well-being is of prime importance to her.

CHRONIC kidney disease sufferers will double in number over the next decade unless the Government starts national preventive screening of high-risk groups, according to one of the world's experts on the rampant "silent killer".
Professor Allan Collins, president of the United States National Kidney Foundation, criticised the Government for not doing enough to combat the spread of the disease, which kills more than 40 Australians a day. Speaking at a conference in Melbourne yesterday, he called for a national screening and early detection program to stem soaring rates of kidney failure.
"If you don't do anything in the next 10 years you're going to double the number of people on dialysis," he said.

New Fuel, End Of Fluoride Era

Current evidence suggests fluorides damage the body, and professional commentary is focused now on thyroid and kidney damage. In view of this, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) recently ended its position of endorsing water fluoridation, stating the "NKF position paper on fluoridation is outdated. The paper is withdrawn and will no longer be circulated." The NKF now claims that it "has no position." The NKF also stated, "Individuals with CKD [chronic kidney disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure" CKD is in turn linked to bone deformities, including brittleness, bone density problems, fractures, kyphosis, etc. (4) (5) (6)
While the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates 19 million U.S. adults have CKD, and that there was a "104%" increase in kidney failure during 1990 to 2001, the NKF describes a different number: "26 million Americans have CKD and another 20 million more are at increased risk." Many do not even know they have CKD, due to the wide range of symptoms that can include high blood pressure, fatigue, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, etc. Sadly for the millions of Americans now suffering or at risk for CKD the warnings about fluoride have been rather quiet and have seen little mainstream publicity. Although hemp continues to be banned from our use, the entire nation has been inundated with fluorides to such a degree it now contaminates most of our foods, as well as most of the national water supply, and yet the government continues to aggressively promote it.

The WHO Oral Health Programme continues to emphasize the importance of public health approaches to the effective use of fluorides for the prevention of dental caries in the 21st century. Everyone should be encouraged to brush daily with a fluoride toothpaste. In addition, where the incidence and prevalence of dental caries in the community is high to moderate, or where there are firm indications that the incidence of caries is increasing, an additional source of fluoride (water, salt or milk) should be considered. Where the country (or area of the country) has a moderate level of economic and technological development, a municipal water supply reaching a large population, trained water engineers and favourable public opinion, water fluoridation using fluoride at a concentration of 0.5–1 mg/l is the method of choice (48). Salt fluoridation is a widely practised alternative that has the advantage of allowing consumer choice. It should be emphasized that "topical" fluorides such as toothpaste can also have a "systemic" effect when they are inadvertently ingested by young children. Indeed, three independent studies in Australia, Canada and the USA indicate that 47–72% of dental fluorosis in children can be attributed to the systemic effect of fluoride toothpastes (49). Dispensing a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, encouraging parents to supervise toothbrushing by their young children, and the use of toothpastes containing less fluoride by young children are approaches to ameliorating this problem. It is recommended that dental fluorosis be monitored periodically to detect increases in or higher-than-acceptable levels of fluorosis. Action, such as adjusting intake of fluoride from water, salt or other sources, should be taken when the prevalence of fluorosis is found to be excessive (48).
In parallel, it is important to maintain and foster a programme of health-services research that might seek to: • update our information on the cost-effectiveness of water, salt and milk fluoridation against a background of the now widespread use of fluoride toothpastes;…………
Such a programme of health-services research will help to maintain and develop the outstanding progress made over the past half century in harnessing the beneficial effects of fluorides.

Concerns about fluoridation are quickly surfacing as the National Kidney Foundation withdrew its support of the chemical additive at the same time the largest association of water professionals in the world was warned not to destroy evidence that may be required in legal actions filed by individuals harmed by drinking fluoridated water.
Following reports of the NKF's acknowledgement that patients with kidney disease "should be notified of the potential risk" to their health from drinking fluoridated water, the American Water Works Association has been given notice that it must not eliminate or tamper with documents or recordings, indicating lawsuits could be filed in the near future.
Attorney Robert Reeves delivered a fluoride evidence preservation notice to the 60,000-member water association last week. The document named AWWA's Denver headquarters, regional offices and national and regional officers as "potentially responsible parties" who might be named in lawsuits filed on behalf of kidney patients and other individuals injured by ingesting fluoride.

Janet Lail learned to live for years with the constant pain she likens to brillo pads rubbed over scorched skin (ouch) and monthly hospitalizations due to a kidney disease (chronic pyelonephritis) that requires she drink loads of water.
Then suddenly the pain disappeared and her hospital visits became fewer and farther between. Even the doctors were confounded-–nothing had changed – except the water-–it was no longer fluoridated.
Lail’s water provider, the South Blount Utility District in Tennessee opened a new plant in June 2004 and started providing unfluoridated water.
Lail told this story to Lesli Bales-Sherrod, a reporter for the Daily Times of Maryville, Tennessee (1)
“`I thought it was a fluke or something,’ (Lail) acknowledged. ‘When you’ve been sick like that for so many years, you don’t want to analyze why (your’re doing better). I didn’t want to talk about it; I was afraid it might go away,’” Bales-Sherrod writes.
Lail is willing to show her medical records to the skeptical. But she probably doesn’t know that the literature is littered with warnings that people with pyelonephritis should avoid fluoride.
But, for some reason, otherwise sensible people trust dentists’ opinions on fluoride’s bodily effects-–as if looking into mouths all day can detect kidney problems.
So legislators follow dentists’ advice and put fluoride into their constituents’ water supplies. Media knight dentists as fluoride experts and write positive fluoride stories, not at all shy to belittle their readers opposed to fluoridation-–a script handed to them by the fluoridationists.

There is a sad parallel between the arrogant and reckless way that the Metropolitan Water District went ahead and fluoridated the water of 18 million people in Southern California and the current attempt by the Queensland government to mandate fluoridation for the whole state. Neither entity has conducted unbiased review of the scientific literature, both have ignored the warnings in the National Research Council (2006) review and neither has sought much input from the population on the matter.

Just a month ago, the official line in the US was that amalgam dental fillings were perfectly safe. Since then, America’s chief health regulator has said they are dangerous for pregnant women and young children, and now it is may ask dentists to pay out $3,000 for filter systems to stop the mercury from the fillings getting into the water system.
The US Congress has been asking the American Dental Association to testify and explain its resistance to installing the filters, known as separators. ADA spokesman William J Walsh says his profession acknowledges that it is the biggest contributor to mercury getting into the water system, but says it does its best to reduce the exposure. However, that at best doesn’t include paying out for a separator, which Walsh says is too expensive for dental practices to buy.
Congressmen took the opportunity to berate the ADA about the dangers of mercury fillings. Republican Dan Burton from Indiana said his grandson became autistic after he received nine vaccinations, seven of which contained mercury.

local people to help decide if their water supply should be fluoridated.
The Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) have received instructions from
health officials on how they should consult local residents. They should
advertise in local newspapers their plans to fluoridate the local water
supply, and then have a three-month consultation process. Only if the
response were 'predominantly in favour of fluoridation' would the water
company be told to start fluoridation.
Apparently this is enshrined in section 58 of the Water Act 2003.So, everybody, you know what you have to do!

Many people have chronic kidney disease, but don’t know it. In America, around 20 million know they have the problem – but the same number also has it without realizing it. This suggests that the disease afflicts around 14 per cent of the population.
The health concerns over fluoridated water are so serious that America’s National Kidney Foundation has come out against itÂ
The problem is that many foods, drinks and dental products such as toothpaste already contain fluoride, which is also increasing people’s exposure to the chemical.

Something in the water
How close are we to compulsory fluoridation in Britain? In July 1997, a
regional UK health authority was given High Court permission to launch a
judicial review to challenge the local water authority's refusal to
fluoridate the water supply (Northern Echo, July 1, 1997). This followed
demands in November 1996 by the British Dental Association (BDA) supported
by the British Medical Association (BMA), health authorities and the British
Fluoridation Society (BFS) for legislation to make fluoridation mandatory on
request by a health authority.
To counteract a recent adjournment debate about forcible fluoridation under
health authority request, the NPWA is now calling for a full independent
public enquiry, and an All Party Group Against Fluoridation has been
reconvened.
Meanwhile, plans are afoot in the US to halt unreined fluoridation. The
Washington Lodge of the National Federation of Federal Employees (mainly
government scientists, including many from the Environmental Protection
Agency) has unanimously condemned fluoridation.
As Dr Robert Carlton, a US EPA scientist, put it, "Fluoridation is the
greatest case of scientific fraud of this century if not of all time."
"Fluoride consumption in the United States is out of control. Organised
dentistry has lobbied for fluoride, unchallenged, for years. Now we have a
glut of fluoride in our water, foods and beverages, along with fluoridated
dental products," said Paul Beeber, president of the New York State
Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation (Townsend Letter, April 1998).
The worry is that the British dental lobby will be allowed to follow suit.

Fluoride : dentists sue ADA
Forty American dentists are suing the American Dental Association for
alleged distribution of misinformation to its members about the dangers of
fluoridation.
The lawsuit, which coincides with the release of a government study linking
fluoride use to cancer, claims that fluoride potentially causes birth
defects as well as cancer, and that using fluoride does not significantly
reduce tooth decay.
The suit also charges that the ADA attempted to pressure the US government
to increase the maximum dose of fluoride in public drinking water.
As a result of one toxicity study showing, as it cautiously put it,
"equivocal" evidence that fluoride causes bone cancer, the union for
employees of the Environmental Protection Agency has asked the EPA to "issue
a health warning recommending that fluoridation be stopped immediately."

Open your mouth against fluoride
One of the campaign platforms quietly on the agenda in the heated London
mayorial campaign may be fluoride.
The scuttlebutt is that Frank Dobson, the Labour candidate, is running on a
not very well publicised pro fluoride campaign that, if elected, he intends
to fluoridate the water of London. Dobson has long been a supporter of
fluoride and supported fluoridation of water as Health Minister.
Usually, less than half the voters bother to get out and vote in the
mistaken notion that there is nothing that they can do to change the course
of their lives. In this case, by voting against Frank Dobson, you may be
casting a vote against poisoning our water supply with an unproven and
dangerous substance that is already in overly plentiful supply. This is no
time for complacency. Make sure to voice your opinion on the government's
Website, then vote. And come to our dental and fluoride conference on
election evening, May 4 to add your voice to many thousands complaining
about yet another poison the government is trying to put in our mouths.

Drowning in fluoride
Nearly all toothpastes sold in the US and UK contain fluoride - typically 1000-1500 parts per million. Commonly used mouth rinses contain 230-900 ppm. Fluoride is also present in candy-flavoured treatments and dentifrices. Fluoride products for preventing tooth decay may contain as much as 9000 ppm. Researchers at Madras Dental College and elsewhere found that the fluoride in fluoridated toothpaste, even if not swallowed, is quickly absorbed through the lining of the mouth and gums into the general circulation (Lancet, 1991; 337: 1213).
Toothpaste and vitamin preparations - and presumably baby formulas - containing fluoride cause allergic reactions in some children, toxic reactions in others (see www.cadvision.com/-fluoride/adverse ). The resulting mouth ulcers don’t respond to antibiotics or local medications, but clear up promptly when non-fluoride toothpaste is substituted (Ann Allergy; 1967; 25: 388-91).
According to Accountability in Research (1997; 5: 225-37), Fejerskov showed in 1990 that fluoride ingested (as from fluoridated baby formulas) by children before their teeth have erupted results in improper calcification of enamel, making the teeth more susceptible to cavities (J Dent Res, 1990; 60: 692-700; Commun Dent Oral Epidemiol, 1990; 18: 46-56). Yet, a warning about overdosing formula-fed babies with fluoride was refused publication (Fluoride, 1987; 30: 125).
Toothpaste ads on TV show generous amounts being squeezed onto a brush, and some parents put a large glob of toothpaste on a child’s toothbrush rather than the pea-sized amount recommended.
Also, small children don’t have complete control of the swallowing reflex. In one test, most preschool children did not expectorate or rinse after brushing with fluoride toothpaste (Pediatr Dent, 1997; 19: 99-103). Fluoride is also present in some multivitamin/mineral tablets.
In the US, 25 per cent of children take fluoride supplements (Wall St Journal, December 21, 1998, p B1), but some physicians fail to consider total intake excluding the supplements (Am J Epidemiol, 1994; 140: 451- 71). If the water, too, is fluoridated, a child’s exposure can be eight times greater than established US safety levels (Earth Island J, 1998; Spring: 40-1).

Battelle found a very positive correlation to the amount of fluoride consumed and the size, number and kind of cancer the mice developed.19 The study ran for only two years or about the life span of the animals. The animals were awash with illness and abnormalities of all kinds including kidney disease, liver disease, blood diseases, tumors, and cancer. In particular the fluoride groups showed thyroid adenomas, dysplasias of the oral mucosa, liver cancer of a very rare type (hepatocholangiocarcinomas), and osteosarcomas of which one appeared in the mid-range male rat and four appeared in high-range male rats. Female rats exhibited dose-related osteosclerosis and all fluoridated rodents developed dental fluorosis.

Americans' distrust of societal institutions continues to grow, and now comes evidence of yet another burgeoning scandal: Fluoride-Gate. A torrent of recent bad news about the safety of fluorides has brought key names to the surface from the murky alphabet soup of players in the fluoride game at EPA, CDC, FDA, NIDCR, USDA, ADA, and AMA. The inevitable questions have begun about who knew what, when, and why was certain information kept quiet.
The first ominous drumbeats started in 2006, when a National Research Council committee recommended that the Environmental Protection Agency lower the allowable amount of fluoride in drinking water - to an unspecified level. As if that wasn't unnerving enough, the committee specifically stated that kidney patients, diabetics, seniors, infants, and outdoor workers were susceptible populations especially vulnerable to harm from fluoride ingestion.
Centers for Disease Control officials strove mightily to dismiss NRC's report as irrelevant, but in August of 2007 CDC's ethics committees received a formal ethics complaint about CDC's activities in promoting fluoridation.

Kidney Foundation Admits: Kidney Patients Should be Notified of Potential Risk from Fluorides and Fluoridated Drinking Water
Ellijay, GA: June 3, 2008 - A new position paper from the National Kidney Foundation concludes that individuals with chronic kidney disease should be notified of the potential risk from exposure to fluorides. The document acknowledges gaping holes in research concerning kidney impacts from fluorides, lending new ammunition to the growing numbers of cities, health professionals, water agencies, and citizens who question industry and government assertions that water fluoridation has been proven safe.
The statement formally cancels NKF’s previous position paper on water fluoridation and recommends that kidney patients be notified of the risks via the organization’s web site. Opponents of fluoridation believe the statement is a step in the right direction, but say that the document still does not go far enough and is not reaching the millions of average kidney patients - perhaps due to an apparent conflict of interest the National Kidney Foundation has in receiving grant funding from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the federal government’s largest promoter of water fluoridation.

Fluoride, hyperactivity and violence
Several studies have shown that exposure to fluoride can cause behavioural
changes (Int Clin Psychopharmacol, 1994; 9: 79-82; Neurotoxicol and Teratol,
1995; 17: 169-77; Fluoride, 1996; 29: 187-8). At a 1998 conference on
fluoride in Washington, Professor Roger Masters reported a link between the
blood lead levels of 280,000 children in Massachusetts and the use of
silicofluorides for water fluoridation; fluoride increases the toxic effects
and absorption of lead. Both in Britain and in Georgia, behaviours
associated with lead toxicity, such as violent crime, are more frequent in
communities using silicofluorides than in areas not using them. At the same
conference, Dr Phyllis Mullinix, a neuro toxicologist at Boston Children's
Hospital, Massachusetts, reported results of a study using two steroids to
treat childhood leukaemia, one of which had a fluorine atom in its
structure. The steroid caused behaviour patterns typical of hyperactivity. A
follow up study showed a significant drop in average IQ scores, compared
with children using the non fluoride drug (Fluoride, 1998; 31: 175).

Wrecked by fluoride
I am horrified that the water supplies in inner city areas like Glasgow may
be fluoridated. I have experienced horrendous reactions to fluoride since
the age of 13, and so have my children. Tests in 1993 proved I have a deadly
allergy to fluoride. The motility of my white blood cells was 42 per cent of
the normal value due to long term exposure to fluoride, and when incubated
for two hours with 1 ppm fluoride, motility was zero. Hence I had no
immunity to infections.
In 1995, I was prescribed (heavily fluoridated) Prozac. Twenty minutes after
taking one 20 mg capsule, I went into anaphylactic shock.
After taking Prozac, my older son developed tonsillitis, a chest infection,
committed criminal assault (on provocation) and attacked a family member. He
has no recollection of these events.
In 1993 my older daughter developed a near fatal acute
inflammation/infection of the white matter of the brain and spinal cord and
had two strokes, leaving her permanently disabled and with depression,
diarrhoea and multiple infections. Dr Sheila Gibson of the Glasgow
Homoeopathic Hospital NHS Trust confirmed that my daughter inherited my
severe allergy to fluoride. Prior to this, she was exposed to fluoride in
dental treatment, mouthwashes, toothpaste and natural sources, and when
prescribed Prozac for depression, she developed full body fungal rash, gut
cramps, worsening headaches and diarrhoea.
My two younger children developed severe behavioural and health problems
after first use of fluoride toothpastes, including attention deficit
hyperactivity type syndrome, chronic tonsillitis, diarrhoea and gut cramps,
asthma like attacks, violence and even self harm. I have withdrawn all
fluoride from my family since 1993. Any accidental exposure since has
rendered my children extremely violent and ill. It took years for the
effects to subside the longer they avoid fluoride, the calmer and healthier
they remain.
We have survived by avoiding fluoride, but what will become of us if it is
put into our water and we can no longer escape it? MM, Glasgow.......

varying degrees over a wide spectrum. Relatively high concentrations of sodium
fluoride, apart from its direct influence on hematopoietic cells, can induce
significant morphologic changes in the spleen.

The Queensland Water Commission advises that they only deal with the recycled sewerage; which they and Premier Bligh have received numerous submissions/

They have received complaints about fluoride also, but the person I spoke to at the Queensland Water Commission had no knowledge whatsoever of the toxicity of fluoride or of the worldwide call to action for a total ban on fluoridation because of the serious human health and environmental adverse health effects and advised that only the Health Dept. deals with fluoride issue,(apparently to be placed in SE Queensland's water supplies lst Dec. 08) and I advised QWC spokesperson, that Mr. Stephen Robertson , Health Minister will be receiving this from me as will many others in Australia and elsewhere. I have previously corresponded on this issue with Premier Bligh, Mr. Lawrence Springborg and others in Government as to the extremely serious adverse health effects of fluoridation. I call on Premier Bligh and others in Government and our Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to comprehend that this is extremely serious and that they must take the only action possible and that is to ban fluoridation permanently and irrevocably.

Emergency Procedures
Personnel involved in the clean up should wear full protective clothing. Eliminate all sources of ignition. Increase ventilation. Avoid generating dust. Do not get water inside containers. Do not allow product to reach drains, sewers or waterways. If the product does enter a waterway, advise the Environmental Protection Authority or your local Waste Management. Use clean, non-sparking tools and equipment.

Good morning Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee. I appreciate the opportunity to appear before this Subcommittee to present the views of the union, of which I am a Vice-President, on the subject of fluoridation of public water supplies.
Our union is comprised of and represents the professional employees at the headquarters location of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in
Summary of Recommendations:-
1) We ask that you order an independent review of a cancer bioassay previously mandated by Congressional committee and subsequently performed by Battelle Memorial Institute with appropriate blinding and instructions that all reviewer's independent determinations be reported to this Committee.
2) We ask that you order that the two waste products of the fertilizer industry that are now used in 90% of fluoridation programs, for which EPA states they are not able to identify any chronic studies, be used in any future toxicity studies, rather than a substitute chemical. Further, since federal agencies are actively advocating that each man woman and child drink, eat and bathe in these chemicals, silicofluorides should be placed at the head of the list for establishing a MCL that complies with the Safe Drinking Water Act. This means that the MCL be protective of the most sensitive of our population, including infants, with an appropriate margin of safety for ingestion over an entire lifetime.
3) We ask that you order an epidemiology study comparing children with dental fluorosis to those not displaying overdose during growth and development years for behavioral and other disorders.
4) We ask that you convene a joint Congressional Committee to give the only substance that is being mandated for ingestion throughout this country the full hearing that it deserves.
National Review of Fluoridation The Subcommittee's hearing today can only begin to get at the issues surrounding the policy of water fluoridation in the
1) excessive and un-controlled fluoride exposures;
2) altered findings of a cancer bioassay;
3) the results and implications of recent brain effects research;
4) the "protected pollutant" status of fluoride within EPA;
5) the altered recommendations to EPA of a 1983 Surgeon General's Panel on fluoride;
6) the results of a fifty-year experiment on fluoridation in two New York communities;
7) the findings of fact in three landmark lawsuits since 1978;
8) the findings and implications of recent research linking the predominant fluoridation chemical with elevated blood-lead levels in children and anti-social behavior; and
9) changing views among dental researchers on the efficacy of water fluoridation
Fluoride Exposures Are Excessive and Un-controlled According to a study by the National Institute of Dental Research, 66 percent of America's children in fluoridated communities show the visible sign of over-exposure and fluoride toxicity, dental fluorosis (1). That result is from a survey done in the mid-1980's and the figure today is undoubtedly much higher.
Centers for Disease Control and EPA claim that dental fluorosis is only a "cosmetic" effect. God did not create humans with fluorosed teeth. That effect occurs when children ingest more fluoride than their bodies can handle with the metabolic processes we were born with, and their teeth are damaged as a result. And not only their teeth. Children's bones and other tissues, as well as their developing teeth are accumulating too much fluoride. We can /see/ the effect on teeth. Few researchers, if any, are looking for the effects of excessive fluoride exposure on bone and other tissues in American children. What has been reported so far in this connection is disturbing. One example is epidemiological evidence (2a, 2b) showing elevated bone cancer in young men related to consumption of fluoridated drinking water.
Without trying to ascribe a cause and effect relationship beforehand, we do know that American children in large numbers are afflicted with hyperactivity-attention deficit disorder, that autism seems to be on the rise, that bone fractures in young athletes and military personnel are on the rise, that earlier onset of puberty in young women is occurring. There are biologically plausible mechanisms described in peer-reviewed research on fluoride that can link some of these effects to fluoride exposures (e.g. 3,4,5,6). Considering the economic and human costs of these conditions, we believe that Congress should order epidemiology studies that use dental fluorosis as an index of exposure to determine if there are links between such effects and fluoride over-exposure.
In the interim, while this epidemiology is conducted, we believe that a national moratorium on water fluoridation should be instituted. There will be a hue and cry from some quarters, predicting increased dental caries, but Europe has about the same rate of dental caries as the
(7) and most European countries do not fluoridate (8). I am submitting letters from European and Asian authorities on this point. There are studies in the
Cancer Bioassay Findings *In 1990, the results of the National Toxicology Program cancer bioassay on sodium fluoride were published *
(10),* the initial findings of which would have ended fluoridation*. But a special commission was hastily convened to review the findings, resulting in the salvation of fluoridation through systematic down-grading of the evidence of carcinogenicity. The final, published version of the NTP report says that there is, "equivocal evidence of carcinogenicity in male rats," changed from "clear evidence of carcinogenicity in male rats."
The change prompted *Dr. William Marcus, who was then Senior Science Adviser and Toxicologist in the Office of Drinking Water, to blow the whistle *about the issue (22), which led to his firing by EPA. Dr. Marcus sued EPA, won his case and was reinstated with back pay, benefits and compensatory damages.* I am* *submitting material from Dr. Marcus to the Subcommittee dealing with the cancer and neurotoxicity risks posed by fluoridation.*
We believe the Subcommittee should call for an independent review of the tumor slides from the bioassay, as was called for by Dr. Marcus (22), with the results to be presented in a hearing before a Select Committee of the Congress. The scientists who conducted the original study, the original reviewers of the study, and the "review commission" members should be called, and an explanation given for the changed findings.
Brain Effects Research Since 1994 there have been six publications that link fluoride exposure to direct adverse effects on the brain. Two epidemiology studies from

Fluoride as a Protected Pollutant The classic example of EPA's protective treatment of this substance, recognized the world over and in the U.S. before the linguistic de-toxification campaign of the 1940's and 1950's as a major environmental pollutant, is the 1983 statement by EPA's then Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water, Rebecca Hanmer (15), that EPA views the use of hydrofluosilicic acid recovered from the waste stream of phosphate fertilizer manufacture as,
"...an ideal solution to a long standing problem. By recovering by-product fluosilicic acid (sic) from fertilizer manufacturing, water and air pollution are minimized, and water authorities have a low-cost source of fluoride..."
In other words, the solution to pollution is dilution, as long as the pollutant is dumped straight into drinking water systems and not into rivers or the atmosphere. I am submitting a copy of her letter.
Other Federal entities are also protective of fluoride. Congressman Calvert of the House Science Committee has sent letters of inquiry to EPA and other Federal entities on the matter of fluoride, answers to which have not yet been received.
We believe that EPA and other Federal officials should be called to testify on the manner in which fluoride has been protected. The union will be happy to assist the Congress in identifying targets for an inquiry. For instance, hydrofluosilicic acid does not appear on the Toxic Release Inventory list of chemicals, and there is a remarkable discrepancy among the Maximum Contaminant Levels for fluoride, arsenic and lead, given the relative toxicities of these substances.
Surgeon General's Panel on Fluoride We believe that EPA staff and managers should be called to testify, along with members of the 1983 Surgeon General's panel and officials of the Department of Human Services, to explain how the original recommendations of the Surgeon General's panel (16) were altered to allow EPA to set otherwise unjustifiable drinking water standards for fluoride.
Kingston and Newburg, New York Results In 1998, the results of a fifty-year fluoridation experiment involving Kingston, New York (un-fluoridated) and Newburg, New York (fluoridated) were published (17). In summary, there is no overall significant difference in rates of dental decay in children in the two cities, but children in the fluoridated city show significantly higher rates of dental fluorosis than children in the un-fluoridated city.
We believe that the authors of this study and representatives of the Centers For Disease Control and EPA should be called before a Select Committee to explain the increase in dental fluorosis among American children and the implications of that increase for skeletal and other effects as the children mature, including bone cancer, stress fractures and arthritis.
Findings of Fact by Judges In three landmark cases adjudicated since 1978 in
In November, 1978, Judge John Flaherty, now Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, issued findings in the case, /Aitkenhead v. Borough of West View, /tried before him in the Allegheny Court of Common Pleas. Testimony in the case filled 2800 transcript pages and fully elucidated the benefits and risks of water fluoridation as understood in 1978. Judge Flaherty issued an injunction against fluoridation in the case, but the injunction was overturned on jurisdictional/ /grounds. His findings of fact were not disturbed by appellate action. Judge Flaherty, in a July, 1979 letter to the Mayor of Aukland New Zealand wrote the following about the case:
"In my view, the evidence is quite convincing that the addition of sodium fluoride to the public water supply at one part per million is extremely deleterious to the human body, and, a review of the evidence will disclose that there was no convincing evidence to the contrary...
"Prior to hearing this case, I gave the matter of fluoridation little, if any, thought, but I received quite an education, and noted that the proponents of fluoridation do nothing more than try to impune (sic) the objectivity of those who oppose fluoridation."
In the
Judge Anthony Farris in Texas found: "[That] the artificial fluoridation of public water supplies, such as contemplated by {Houston} City ordinance No. 80-2530 may cause or contribute to the cause of cancer, genetic damage, intolerant reactions, and chronic toxicity, including dental mottling, in man; that the said artificial fluoridation may aggravate malnutrition and existing illness in man; and that the value of said artificial fluoridation is in some doubt as to reduction of tooth decay in man."
The significance of Judge Flaherty's statement and his and the other two judges' findings of fact is this: proponents of fluoridation are fond of reciting endorsement statements by authorities, such as those by CDC and the American Dental Association, both of which have long-standing commitments that are hard if not impossible to recant, on the safety and efficacy of fluoridation. Now come three truly independent servants of justice, the judges in these three cases, and they find that fluoridation of water supplies is not justified.
*Proponents of fluoridation are absolutely right about one thing: there is no real controversy about fluoridation when the facts are heard by an open mind.*

Hydrofluosilicic Acid There are no chronic toxicity data on the predominant chemical, hydrofluosilicic acid and its sodium salt, used to fluoridate American communities. Newly published studies (19) i*ndicate a link between use of these chemicals and elevated level of lead in children's blood and anti-social behavior*. Material from the authors of these studies has been submitted by them independently.
We believe the authors of these papers and their critics should be called before a Select Committee to explain to you and the American people what these papers mean for continuation of the policy of fluoridation.
Changing Views on Efficacy and Risk In recent years, two prominent dental researchers who were leaders of the pro-fluoridation movement announced reversals of their former positions because they concluded that water fluoridation is not an effective means of reducing dental caries and that it poses serious risks to human health. The late Dr. John Colquhoun was Principal Dental Officer of Aukland, New Zealand, and he published his reasons for changing sides in 1997 (20). In 1999, Dr. Hardy Limeback, Head of Preventive Dentistry, University of Toronto, announced his change of views, then published a statement (21) dated April 2000. I am submitting a copy of Dr. Limeback's publications.
We believe that Dr. Limeback, along with fluoridation proponents who have not changed their minds, such as Drs. Ernest Newbrun and Herschel Horowitz, should be called before a Select Committee to testify on the reasons for their respective positions.

Artificial fluoridation of drinking water by municipalities at 1ppm of fluoride ion probably does not reduce tooth decay, except for a minor effect on deciduous teeth. Hexafluorosilicic acid and its sodium salt, which contain other toxic substances because they are not purified, certainly have no significant benefit.
Proponents of fluoridation have censored most media, ignored intelligent discussion of fluoridation, slandered most opponents of fluoridation, and overturned legal judgments against fluoridation in a manner that demonstrates their political power. Many published studies that had conclusions favoring fluoridation were later found unsupported by their raw data. There is evidence that fluoridation increases the incidence of cancer, hip fractures, joint problems, and that by causing fluorosis it damages both teeth and bones. Other medical problems may also occur, including neurologic damage.
*Fluoridation of municipal water should cease*. Defluoridation of naturally fluoridated water down to 0.4 ppm of fluoride should be mandated. Individuals should remove fluoride from their tap water if fluoridation cannot be stopped.

SUMMARY: *Recent evidence indicates that fluoride produces neuronal destruction and synaptic injury* by a mechanism that involves free radical production and lipid peroxidation. For a number of pathological disorders of the central nervous system (CNS), excitotoxicity plays a critical role. Various studies have shown that many of the neurotoxic metals, such as mercury, lead, aluminum, and iron also injure neural elements in the CNS by an excitotoxic mechanism. Free radical generation and lipid peroxidation, especially in the face of hypomagnesemia and low neuronal energy production, also magnify excitotoxic sensitivity of neurons and their elements. This paper reviews briefly some of the studies that point to a common mechanism for the CNS neurotoxic effects of fluoride and calls for research directed toward further elucidation of this mechanism.
INTRODUCTION
Compelling evidence indicates t*hat fluoride produces injury to the central nervous system (CNS) by several mechanisms. Of particular interest is the ability of
fluoride to induce free radical generation and lipid peroxidation in the brain, especially in the hippocampus. In addition, fluoride enhances aluminum absorption
from the gastrointestinal mucosa and across the blood-brain barrier. Of particular concern is the recent demonstration that fluoride readily forms a chemical complex with aluminum, similar to the phosphate ion, which is toxic to neurons at low concentrations and can act as an activator of G-proteins, a membrane link to second messenger activation.

Findings
The Natick Fluoridation Study Committee conducted a thorough review of the scientific literature and made the following findings regarding the benefits and risks of water fluoridation.
o Recent studies of the incidence of cavities in children show little to no difference between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.

o The impact of fluoride on human reproduction at the levels received from environmental exposures is a serious concern.
A recent epidemiology study shows a correlation between decreasing annual fertility rate in humans and increasing
levels of fluoride in drinking water.
o Animal bioassays suggest that fluoride is a carcinogen, especially for tissues such as bone (osteosarcoma) and
liver. The potential for carcinogenicity is supported by fluoride's genotoxicity and pharmacokinetic properties.
Human epidemiology studies to date are inconclusive, but no appropriate major study has been conducted.
o Fluoride inhibits or otherwise alters the actions of a long list of enzymes important to metabolism, growth, and cell
regulation.
o Sodium fluorosilicate and fluorosilicic acid, the two chemicals Natick intends to use to fluoridate the water
supply, have been associated with increased concentrations of lead in tap water and increased blood lead levels in
children, based on case reports and a new, as-yet-unpublished study.
o If Natick fluoridates its water supply at the proposed level, most children under the age of three will daily
receive more fluoride than is recommended for them.

Results. Eleven of the reports evaluated dosage schedules similar to that recommended by the American Dental Association. One^ potentially highly biased study of primary teeth of children during the first three years of life reported a 47.2 percent^ reduction in dental caries experience. Investigators in one trial involving 3- to 6-year-old children found a 43.0 percent difference, and another trial of children in this age group^ did not find a significant benefit. Researchers in several studies involving older children detected a significant reduction in caries increments in permanent teeth with the use of fluoride supplements. Fifteen of the studies had withdrawal rates of 30 percent or higher. All of the five included studies that evaluated the association between use of fluoride supplements and dental fluorosis found that use of the supplements increased the risk of mild-to-moderate fluorosis. Conclusions. There is weak and inconsistent evidence that the use of fluoride supplements prevents dental caries in primary teeth. There is evidence that such supplements prevent caries in permanent teeth. Mild-to-moderate dental fluorosis is a significant side effect.

My final comment:
What we all need is Affordable Dentistry - how many of us are shocked at the charges for services by Dentists - it is completely out of reach of a great many of the population - we need and deserve Affordable Dentistry; this is where the problem lies; and basic oral hygiene and the chemical cocktail of our foods and drinks. I know people that have had to let their teeth rot out of their heads because they simply cannot afford the high cost of any dental services and the increase in those of us struggling to cope with the cost of any dental care has increased dramatically. This is what our Governments should have done instead of building more toxic chemical plants to continue poisoning the population with toxic chemical waste fluoride in our water supply - demand an end to water fluoridation now as the evidence I have presented here is Evidence of Harm and Suppression of Evidence as to the absolute terrible dangers to the worldwide population from water fluoridation schemes.
I can see massive worldwide litigation emerging as a result of the horrendous adverse effects to human health and environmental health from water fluoridation particularly in view of the extensive credible evidence from many Professionals /Experts around the world which has been ignored by global Governments for decades - this is deadly serious and the time is up well and truly. I say that this is a not only a human health & environmental health matter, it also affects every living species and I also say to you God help you if you continue with this toxic fluoridation scheme, because nothing will save you from the horrendous consequences of such a negligent/arrogant action and a population that is now becoming informed and educated in this regard even though It's been particularly difficult in Australia to get the message out due to a lack of support from the media for anyone opposing fluoridation.

BE GREEN - USE CHEMICAL FREE PRODUCTS TO HELP OUR GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH
My first entry for this new blogging - I am down at Redcliffe at the moment - it is lovely. I really hope that our global environment can be cleaned up big time - we have so much pollution - overuse of so many tens of thousands of chemicals is harming human health and environmental health - we all must change this and we must choose and use chemical free alternatives to everything possible - particularly we must use chemical free means of pest and weed control. Humans are an endangered species, it is about time we all realise this.
